Bowflex SelectTech 840 Adjustable Kettlebell, 3.5 to 18 kg

Starts light enough to press, goes heavy enough to swing.

Six kettlebells' worth of weight in one bell. Turn the dial while it sits in its base, lift, and you're training at anything from a 3.5 kg empty handle to 18 kg. The plates you didn't choose stay in the base, and the whole thing lives on one spot of floor.

A light start: the empty handle is 3.5 kg, so a one-arm press has a weight it can begin at.
Six weights, one dial: 3.5, 5.5, 9, 11, 16 and 18 kg, chosen with a turn of the dial.
Small-flat sized: 22.4 x 17.8 cm and 31.8 cm tall, in Bowflex's figures.
Locks before it lifts: the dial only turns with the bell seated in its base.

Pick the weight in a second

Leave the bell in its base, turn the dial to the setting you want and lift straight up. The plates you chose come with the handle, and the rest stay in the base for next time. Between a squat at one weight and a press at another, that's a turn and a lift, with no plates to carry and nothing to screw on.

Empty, it's 3.5 kg

Set the dial to its lowest number and the handle lifts out with no plates on it at all. That's 3.5 kg, a sensible place for a one-arm press to begin, so the exercise most adjustable bells are too heavy for has a place in your week.

One bell, the whole session

A goblet squat at a middle setting, a deadlift near the top, a press back at the light end. One bell covers all three, which is why it suits a room where the coffee table has to move before you train. Give yourself 0.6 m of clear space beyond your furthest reach, as Bowflex asks.

Lives on one spot

Bowflex lists it at 22.4 by 17.8 cm and 31.8 cm tall. Measure the place it will actually live, under a desk, beside a shelf or in a cupboard, and check the height as well as the width. To move it, set the dial to the top weight and carry bell and base together by the handles moulded into the base.

Dial setting Weight Step up from the setting before
8 lb 3.5 kg (empty handle) Starting point
12 lb 5.5 kg +2 kg
20 lb 9 kg +3.5 kg
25 lb 11 kg +2 kg
35 lb 16 kg +5 kg
40 lb 18 kg +2 kg

Three of the five steps are 2 kg. The two big ones are 5.5 to 9 kg and 11 to 16 kg. Swings, deadlifts and goblet squats take them comfortably, because your legs and hips do the work. On a press your shoulder lifts the bell alone, so stay at one setting and add reps until the top of your range feels easy, then move up. If you already press more than 18 kg, or your training means letting a bell fall, a fixed cast-iron bell will serve you better.

Set it down, never drop it

This is the one rule that comes with the dial. Bowflex warns that dropping the kettlebell can damage the plates or the lock and let plates come away from the handle without warning, and that it voids the warranty. Don't lean on the handle or use it for press-ups either. Finish every rep under control, lower it to the mat, inspect it before you train and test the lock once a month, as the manual shows.

How heavy does the Bowflex SelectTech 840 go?
From 3.5 kg to 18 kg, in six settings: 3.5, 5.5, 9, 11, 16 and 18 kg. The dial shows them in pounds, 8 to 40 lb.
Is it a good kettlebell for beginners?
It's a good fit for a beginner who wants to press as well as swing. The empty handle weighs 3.5 kg, so the press has a light place to start, and the heavier settings are there for swings and deadlifts as you get stronger. Bowflex says it isn't intended for anyone under 14.
Why aren't the steps even?
Because the five plates inside aren't the same weight. Most steps are 2 kg, but 5.5 to 9 kg and 11 to 16 kg are bigger jumps. On a press, add reps at one setting before you move up.
Can I drop it?
No. Bowflex warns that a drop can damage the plates or the locking mechanism and let plates come away from the handle without warning. Lower it to the floor under control at the end of every set.
Does it come with a base?
Yes. The bell sits in its base while you change the weight, and the plates you don't select stay there. The base has lift handles moulded in, so you can carry the bell and base together with the dial set to the top weight.
How much space do I need?
Bowflex lists the kettlebell at 22.4 x 17.8 x 31.8 cm. For training, it asks for 0.6 m of clear space beyond your furthest reach in every direction.
How do I look after it?
Wipe it with a cloth dampened with warm water and a little mild soap, then dry it. Don't use solvents, harsh detergents or bleach, and don't take it apart. Inspect it before each session and test the lock once a month.
