FELIWAY Optimum Plug-In Diffuser Starter Kit for Cats

Your cat will hide when the fireworks start. Get that room ready now.

A frightened cat doesn't want a cuddle. It wants somewhere to hide, and the kindest thing you can do is make that place ready in advance. Plug this diffuser in about two weeks before the fireworks, in the room your cat retreats to, and leave it running day and night. Alongside a few high hiding spots and drawn curtains, it helps make that room feel calmer by the time the first bang goes off.

Ready before the first bang: plug it in two weeks ahead, the head start Cats Protection suggests, so the room is prepared long before the night itself.
Works where your cat hides: it goes in the room your cat already runs to, and the maker rates one diffuser for up to 70 m².
Nothing to remember: no spray, no collar, no routine to keep up. It stays on round the clock, and you won't smell a thing.
Everything in the box: the diffuser, a 48 ml refill that lasts about four weeks, and a UK plug, so it's working the day it arrives.

Set up the room before your cat needs it

When the bangs start, your cat will head for its safest spot: the top of the wardrobe, a box on its side, the back of a cupboard. You can't stop the noise, but you can decide what that room is like. FELIWAY Optimum releases synthetic cat pheromones, the scent signals cats use to read a place as familiar. People can't smell them. Plug it into a wall socket in the room your cat retreats to most, switch it on, and leave it.

Two weeks is the whole trick

This isn't something to grab on the afternoon of Bonfire Night. A diffuser needs time running in the room before it counts, which is why Cats Protection suggests a couple of weeks' head start. For 5 November, that means plugging it in during the second half of October. Do it then and it's one job ticked off while you sort the rest of the plan. If you're later than that, plug it in today. There'll still be bangs to come, right through to New Year's Eve.

What it will and won't do

It won't block the noise, and it isn't a fix on its own. What it does is help the place your cat hides in feel calmer, so the hiding works better. Pair it with the rest of the plan and you've done what you can before the night.

Plug it in two weeks before the first bang. Later than that? Plug it in today, because the bangs carry on to New Year's Eve.

Plug in, switch on, done

The starter kit is the diffuser and one 48 ml refill. Fit the refill, push the diffuser into a UK socket and turn it on. That's the whole set-up. Keep it on day and night and one refill lasts about four weeks, which covers the build-up to Bonfire Night and the weeks after.

The rest of the plan for your cat

Give it a few high, hidden places, in different rooms and away from doors and windows: a box on its side, an igloo bed, the top of a wardrobe.

Bring it in before dark, then shut the cat flap, windows and outside doors. Put a litter tray indoors for the evening.

Leave the inside doors open, so it can move between hiding places as the noise shifts.

Let it hide. Don't coax it out or pick it up. It'll come out when it's ready, even if that's the next morning.

The full countdown, for cats and dogs, is in our fireworks guide on the VivaNutrition blog.

When should I plug it in for Bonfire Night?
About two weeks before the fireworks start, which is the head start Cats Protection suggests. For 5 November, that's the second half of October. If you've left it later, plug it in now: fireworks carry on well past the 5th, and New Year's Eve isn't far behind.
Will it stop my cat being scared of fireworks?
Nothing you plug in will stop the bangs, and this isn't a fix on its own. It helps make the room your cat hides in feel calmer, which is why it works best alongside hiding places, closed curtains and a cat kept in after dark. If your cat panics, hurts itself or is still frightened days later, talk to your vet.
Where should I put it?
In the room your cat retreats to most, the one with its favourite hiding spot. Plug it straight into a wall socket. The maker rates one diffuser for up to 70 m², which is more than most living rooms.
Will I be able to smell it?
No. It's odourless to people.
How long does it last?
The refill in the box lasts about four weeks with the diffuser on day and night. After that, the diffuser takes a new refill.
Is it OK for kittens?
Yes. The maker says it's for cats and kittens of all ages.
Does it work for dogs?
No, it's made for cats. For dogs, the diffuser to look for is Adaptil. Our fireworks guide covers what else a frightened dog needs.
Is this the UK version?
Yes. This page links to model D92110B, which has a UK plug. Some FELIWAY Optimum listings on Amazon are imports with a different plug, so if you shop around, check the model number.
