365 nm UV Torch for Cat Urine, Rechargeable, with the Back in the Tray Guide

See the spots you've been missing. Then find out why they're there.

Turn the lights off, sweep this torch slowly over the carpet, and old, dried wee shows up as a glow. Sometimes even the patch you scrubbed last week. Where those spots are is the best clue you'll get to why your cat is going there, and Back in the Tray, our 60-page guide, shows you how to read them and gives you a 28-day plan to get your cat back in the tray. The torch and the guide, both for £19.99, the guide's own price.

Shows you where: under 365 nm UV, dried cat wee glows. Sweep carpets, sofas, skirting boards and the bottom of doors, and tape each spot so you can find it again in daylight.
Less purple, clearer glow: cheaper 395 nm torches wash the room in purple light, which makes faint stains harder to pick out. At 365 nm less of that light leaks out, so stains stand out more clearly.
Tells you why: beside the tray, by the back door, the same rug every time: each pattern points to a different cause. The guide's clue table matches the spots to the reason and the chapter that fixes it.
Stops the spot calling them back: if your cat can still smell it, to them it's still a toilet. The cleaning card shows you how to clean it so their nose agrees, then you check again with the torch once it's dry.
A plan, not just a torch: Back in the Tray, 60 pages and 8 printables, with a 28-day plan and a tracker to get your rooms back. Sent by email as a PDF.
Rechargeable, palm-sized: charges by USB, cable in the box, so there are no batteries to buy, and it's small enough to keep in a kitchen drawer.

Lights off, torch on

Wait until it's dark, or close the curtains, and switch the lights off. Hold the torch a short way from the surface and sweep slowly: along the skirting boards, across the carpet, over the sofa, up the bottom of doors and walls. Check upright surfaces as well as the floor, because a cat that's spraying aims at walls, doors and curtains. Put a small piece of masking tape on every patch that glows, then look at each one again in daylight. Never shine it into anyone's eyes, your cat's included.

Why 365 nm, not 395

Most cheap UV torches run at 395 nm. They're bright, but they throw a purple wash over everything, and a faint, old stain can disappear into it. This one runs at 365 nm, where less visible light leaks out, so the glow you're looking for stands out more clearly against the dark.

Where the spots are tells you why

"It's everywhere" is how most owners describe it, and once you start marking the spots it almost never is. Everywhere turns into three or four places, and those places mean something. Back in the Tray calls place the strongest clue you have. Here's how the guide reads it:

From the guide's clue table

Right next to the tray, or just over the edge. Your cat is trying to use the tray and something about it is off: size, cleanliness, litter. Chapter 4.

The same soft spots again and again: a rug, the sofa, a duvet. The place has started to smell like a toilet to your cat. Chapters 4 and 5.

Near doors, windows and the cat flap. Usually a cat outside, and often spraying. Chapters 6 and 7.

Stairs, landings and the middle of a room. Something inside the home is worrying your cat. Chapter 6.

Lots of small wees in several places over a day or two. That's a bladder sign. See the vet first. Chapter 2.

It isn't spite. It's a clue.

On your bed. The week you were away. The day after the new kitten arrived. It's hard not to take it personally. But the international guidelines on cats living together list "cats can be spiteful" as a myth, and the cat vets' own advice to owners puts it plainly: a cat doesn't wee outside the tray out of spite, but because a physical, social or medical need isn't being met. The timing that feels pointed is information. The guide shows you how to use it, and why telling your cat off only makes things worse.

Clean to you isn't clean to your cat

You've cleaned that spot. More than once, probably. But wee soaks down into carpet and underlay, and a patch that looks and smells fine to you can still smell like a toilet to your cat. Some household cleaners make it worse: anything with ammonia smells like urine to a cat. The torch shows you how far each spot really goes, and the guide's cleaning card shows you how to get it out.

The cleaning card, from the guide

Soak up with kitchen roll. Press, don't rub.

Use an enzyme cleaner made for cat urine, or a warm 10% solution of biological washing powder, then a cold rinse. Test it on a hidden patch first.

Clean up to three times wider than the mark.

Never use anything containing ammonia.

Keep your cat off the spot until it's completely dry, then check it again with the torch.

Give the spot a new job: a tray there for now, or food, a bed or play.

Your guide: Back in the Tray

The torch shows you where. The guide tells you why, and what to do next. It's 60 pages with 8 printables, built on four steps: rule out the medical causes with your vet, read your cat's clues, reset the tray, the spots and the stress, then make it stick. Inside are the decision tree, the incident log, the home map, the cleaning card and the 28-day tracker, plus the right tray size, number, place and litter for your cat. It sells on its own for £19.99. With this torch, the two come together for that price, and the guide arrives as a PDF download sent by email when you order.

28 days to get your rooms back

Maybe the spare room door stays shut now. Maybe the rug's rolled up in the hall, or there's a sheet of plastic on the bed. The guide's 28-day plan puts the whole fix in order. Days 1 to 7: the vet check, the log, the home map and a UV sweep after dark. Days 8 to 21: fix what your clues point to, starting with the tray and the old spots. Days 22 to 28: keep what's working and ease off the rest. A tracker lets you count the accidents day by day, so you can see the change for yourself. Some cats turn round quickly and some take longer, and the guide is straight with you about when to get more help.

Will it show every spot?
It'll show you a lot you can't see now, but not everything, and not everything that glows is wee. Dried urine glows under UV, which is why the cat vets suggest a UV torch for finding soiled spots. Some cleaning products, detergents and spills glow too, so check each taped patch in daylight before you add it to your map.
Why pay £19.99 when a UV torch costs a few pounds?
A torch on its own shows you where the mess is. It doesn't tell you why your cat keeps going there, or how to stop it. Here you get a 365 nm torch and Back in the Tray, the guide that reads the spots and gives you the 28-day plan, for £19.99, which is what the guide costs on its own.
Is my cat doing it to spite me?
No. The cat vets' guidelines list "cats can be spiteful" as a myth. The timing that feels pointed, your bed or the week you were away, is a clue to what changed for your cat, and Chapter 1 of the guide shows you how to read it.
Do I still need to see the vet?
Yes, and the guide makes that visit count. A sore bladder is a common reason cats stop using the tray, so Step 1 is the vet check, with a log and a vet-visit sheet to take with you. If your cat is straining and passing little or no urine, ring your vet now: that's an emergency.
Will my cat be sorted in 28 days?
The 28 days are the structure for finding and fixing the cause, in order. Some cats change quickly and some need longer, and cystitis can come and go. If day 28 arrives with no real change, Chapter 11 tells you exactly what to do next.
How do I charge it?
With the USB cable in the box. Plug it into a USB phone charger or a laptop. There are no batteries to buy or replace.
How do I get the guide?
It comes with every torch. After you order, we email you a link to download Back in the Tray as a PDF. Read it on your phone and print the pages you want to use.
What about delivery and returns?
Delivery is free and tracked. If the torch isn't right, you have 30 days to send it back free, as long as it's unused and in its original packaging.
