A full bowl at bedtime isn't the whole story.

If your cat barely touches its water, you've probably stood over that bowl and wondered whether it's drinking enough. Maybe you bought a fountain and your cat walked straight past it. Maybe it went slimy and ended up in the cupboard. Or your vet said to get more water into your cat and left you to work out how.

What most owners never hear is that the biggest tap in the house is the food bowl. One 85 g pouch carries about 72 ml of water, more than many cats will drink from a bowl in a day. Your cat takes it in without being persuaded to drink.

More Water in 14 Days turns the advice of iCatCare, Cats Protection and the research into one five-step loop: Count, Feed, Place, Flow, Keep. You count your cat's water on days 1 to 3, do the work, then count again on days 12 to 14. The difference is there on paper.

The method

Five steps, then count again

01

Count

A 3-day count that turns a guess into a number, with the water in the food included.

02

Feed

The biggest tap in the house. Swap one dry portion for a pouch, slowly, for around 70 ml more a day.

03

Place

A water map built around where your cat likes to drink: one station per cat, plus one.

04

Flow

Win your cat over to a fountain in three steps, with a fix for the usual reasons a cat holds back.

05

Keep

Clean water without the dread: a daily look, a weekly wash, and a clean at the first sign of film.

06

Count again

Days 12 to 14: the same count, side by side with the first. The total row shows what changed.

Chapter 6 sits outside the loop because you might need it at any point: vet now, today, or book in, on one sheet you can pin up.

What you get

Why the bowl is the wrong thing to watch

When researchers compared diets, cats on dry food alone drank the most from the bowl and took in the least water overall. Swap some dry for wet and the bowl may well stay fuller while the total goes up. Watch only the bowl and you'd think the plan had failed just as it started working. This book has you watch the total.

  • ✓

Know your cat's real number. A 3-day count with a check bowl for evaporation, the food sum you can do in the kitchen, and a worked example to copy.

  • ✓

Use the biggest lever first. A swap plan, pouch by pouch over days 4 to 11, with the calories matched and a weigh-in on day 14.

  • ✓

Win over a fussy eater. A fix for each way a cat turns its nose up at wet food, and how to soak kibble properly (a splash doesn't count).

  • ✓

Put water where your cat wants it: the station rules, a choice test that finds your cat's favourite bowl, and three floor plans to copy.

  • ✓

Get the fountain used. A three-step introduction at your cat's pace, and a table that matches each refusal to its fix.

  • ✓

Clean without the dread: a cleaning card for the fridge, a weekly strip-down that takes a few minutes, and the three signs that say it's strip-down day.

  • ✓

Know when it's the vet. Now, today or book in: one sheet with the warning signs, what to bring, and why you never syringe water.

  • ✓

Sourced and British. Built on iCatCare, Cats Protection, the PDSA and the research, with all 40 sources numbered at the back.

Questions

Before you buy

My cat eats wet food and I never see it drink. Is that a problem?

Not on its own. iCatCare says not seeing your cat drink isn't a concern if nothing has changed and your cat is well, and a cat on wet food may get most of its water from the food. Chapter 1 shows you how to count it, so you know instead of wondering.

Will my cat take in more water in 14 days?

That's what the plan is built to do, and you measure it: a 3-day count at the start and the same count on days 12 to 14. The biggest lever is the food, so your cat may drink less from the bowl while taking in more overall. If the total hasn't moved by day 14, Chapter 5 shows you where to look first.

I've just bought a fountain. Will this help my cat use it?

Yes. Chapter 4 brings the fountain in over three steps at your cat's pace, with the old bowl still down, and a table matches each refusal to its likely cause and fix. Chapter 5 and the cleaning card keep it clean with a few minutes a week.

Do I need a fountain to use the book?

No. Every step works with bowls. Chapter 4 also has two simple tests to see whether your cat likes moving water before you buy anything. If it does, a fountain gives your cat that all day.

My vet told me to get more water into my cat after cystitis. Is this for me?

Yes, alongside your vet's plan. Your vet comes first, including any prescription diet, so the book has you check before changing food. Extra water stations and the count fit alongside it, and your count sheets give your vet real numbers to look at.

Is it safe to switch my cat to wet food?

The book has you mention the switch to your vet first, then make it gradually over days 4 to 11, following the feeding guides so the calories match, and weighing your cat again on day 14.
